We retrospectively reviewed 360 consecutive cholecystectomies done by the four surgeons in our private group practice. No patient had dehiscence of the wound or evisceration. One patient had a seroma, which was opened in the office, but the fluid contained no white blood cells or bacteria on smear, and the culture was negative.

Cholecystectomy in the elderly
The American Journal of Surgery, 1988A 4-year retrospective review of 212 patients over 70 years of age who underwent elective and emergency cholecystectomies was undertaken. Elective procedures were performed in 119 patients (76 women, 43 men) whereas 93 patients (43 women, 50 men) underwent emergency surgery. Complications developed in 25 and 34 patients, respectively.

Historically, cholelithiasis in children was thought to develop secondary to hemolytic disease. Within the past 20 years, however, its incidence in children without hemolysis is being diagnosed more frequently. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the procedure of choice for gallbladder removal in children.
