Structure of Chondroitin Sulfate
2006Publisher Summary This chapter presents the up‐to‐date information on the structure of chondroitin sulfate (CS) and dermatan sulfate (DS). CS is an anionic linear polysaccharide, which is synthesized as part of proteoglycan (PG) molecules in vertebrates and invertebrates.

Dermatan sulfate and chondroitin 6-sulfate conformations
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1973Abstract X-ray diffraction patterns show that dermatan sulfate in oriented, crystalline films occurs as two or three or eight-fold helices. The two-fold helix has a greater axial rise per disaccharide residue [ h = 9.6 A ] than the corresponding chondroitin 6-sulfate helix [ h = 9.3 A ] .

Calcium binding by chondroitin sulfate
Calcified Tissue Research, 1968The binding of calcium by chondroitin sulfate C was studied by employing biological and physicochemical methods for the quantitative determination of ionic calcium. Mean values for logKj, the logarithm of the uncorrected formation constant for a calcium-chondroitin sulfate complex, were 1.64 with the frog heart technique, 1.55 with the murexide method,

Synthesis of Chondroitin Sulfate Oligosaccharides and Chondroitin Sulfate Glycopeptides
2019Chondroitin sulfate (CS) and chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan (CSPG) belong to the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) family, a class of poly-anionic glyco-conjugates widely expressed by animal cells. They play important roles in many biological events. Here, we summarize the main considerations in the design of chemical and enzymatic methodologies to access ...

Chondroitin Sulfate and RBC Clumping
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1984To the Editor. —Chondroitin sulfate is a new viscoelastic substance that is advocated as a protective agent for intraocular lens insertion. Chondroitin sulfate has been shown to be more effective in protecting the endothelium of animal and human corneas than other substances.1Contact of intraocular lenses with endothelium causes endothelial damage and
