Reducing post‐cesarean sepsis: Current best practice in prevention and treatment
Abstract Cesarean section is the most common surgical procedure performed worldwide. It is associated with good perinatal and maternal outcomes when indicated. The rising global cesarean birth rate has coincided with an increase in post‐cesarean sepsis – specifically site infections, which have an incidence of 7% worldwide. Post‐cesarean sepsis remains

Randomized controlled trial of prolonged second stage: extending the time limit vs usual guidelines. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: Guidelines for management of the second stage have been proposed since the 1800s and were created largely by expert opinion. Current retrospective data are mixed regarding differences in maternal and neonatal outcomes with a prolonged second ...

High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a prototypic alarmin and plays an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory process in spontaneous preterm birth. This study was conducted to compare the levels of HMGB1 in amniotic fluid and amnion membranes

Fetal ear length (FEL) correlates with gestational age and may help detect chromosomal anomalies. This study developed a nomogram for a Southern European population, showing high measurement reliability. While FEL ≤ 5th percentile increased anomaly risk, its moderate sensitivity and specificity limit clinical utility.

Streptococcus mitis Chorioamnionitis after Dental Scaling and Oral Sex
Background. Oral sex is postulated to be a risk factor for the introduction of bacteria into the amniotic cavity. Common oropharyngeal bacteria have been implicated in reports of second trimester chorioamnionitis via ascending vaginal transmission ...

Modern Management of Clinical Chorioamnionitis [PDF]
Clinical chorioamnionitis continues to contribute to fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality. Significant advances have been made in the last 20 years in understanding the pathophysiologic processes leading to chorioamnionitis. This review addresses the history, incidence, pathophysiology, host defenses, risk factors, diagnosis, and maternal and ...

Bowel habits in preterm infants: Observations from the first 2 weeks of life
Abstract Objectives Uniform descriptions of normal preterm infant bowel habits are lacking, causing ambiguity in identifying abnormal bowel habits in this population. This study examines preterm infants' bowel habits and their association with maternal and infant factors in the first 2 weeks of life. Methods An observational study included infants with
