Chorioamnionitis is an inflammation of the placental membranes induced by microorganisms which reach the endometrial cavity from the vagina and uterine cervix. Premature labor frequently depends on infections. In patients with premature rupture of membranes (PROM) antibiotic treatment can prevent intra-amniotic inflammation if it is absent at admission.

In summary, acute intra-amniotic infection or chorioamnionitis is a relatively common complication of pregnancy and may be associated with significant maternal and neonatal morbidity. Maternal mortality is rare, as is mortality in term infants. Mortality in premature infants is probably related to prematurity itself rather than infection per se ...

Significance of chorioamnionitis
Early Human Development, 1992In preterm deliveries, we have reported a high incidence (30-50%) of histologic chorioamnionitis (CAM) in the placenta. There is little evidence about the effects of CAM on preterm infants. We investigated the levels of complements and cytokines in the cord blood, the pathological nature of the placenta, the L/S ratio of gastric and tracheal aspirate ...

Candida tropicalis chorioamnionitis
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1995A case of Candida tropicalis chorioamnionitis at 25 weeks' gestation is presented, and the literature is reviewed. This is the first report, to our knowledge, of C. tropicalis diagnosed antenatally with confirmed congenital infection.

Ureaplasma Urealyticum Chorioamnionitis
Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 1994EDITORIAL COMMENT: We accepted this paper for publication to remind readers that Ureaplasma urealyticum, which is a common vaginal commensal, can be associated with and apparently the cause of chorioamnionitis, premature labour, premature rupture of the membranes and intrauterine infection.

CHORIOAMNIONITIS AND ENDOMETRITIS
Infectious Disease Clinics of North America, 1997Chorioamnionitis complicates 1% to 2% of all pregnancies and may affect 10% of women with certain risk factors. Intraamnionic infection may result in devastating morbidity for both the fetus and the mother. Also, chorioamnionitis is associated with higher cesarean section rates. As demonstrated earlier, endometritis is a common complication of cesarean

Chorioamnionitis correlates to preterm delivery prior to 30 weeks of gestation. In most studies, proxies of intrauterine infection (clinical chorioamnionitis, histological chorioamnionitis, intra-amniotic increase in cytokines) are associated with acute neonatal morbidity and mortality and, at least to some degree, with neurological impairments ...

Chorioamnionitis is both a clinical and a histopathologic diagnosis. The latter may be clinically silent, but it commonly accompanies reproductive casualty and premature birth. Satisfactory delineation of its pathogenesis is elusive. Detailed histologic study indicates that endometrial inflammation usually precedes that of the membranes.

Chorioamnionitis and brain injury
Clinics in Perinatology, 2002The limited available evidence supports a strong association of chorioamnionitis with neonatal encephalopathy and CP in the term infant. The association of chorioamnionitis with depressed Apgar scores or neonatal seizures and with CP is equivocal in the preterm infant.

Chorioamnionitis and Uterine Function
Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2000To clarify the relationships between intrapartum chorioamnionitis and abnormalities of uterine function, including labor abnormalities, cesarean delivery, and hemorrhage during parturition. We did a retrospective cohort study on 16,226 deliveries between 1986 and 1996 that were identified from the University of California, San Francisco Perinatal ...
