Les Marquises semblent se prêter à des descriptions particulières, du fait même que, polynésiennes, elles ne répondent pas à l’image des autres archipels : atolls des Tuamotu ou îles hautes du vent et Sous le vent. Éloignées de tout, généralement austères, sans lagon, elles offrent l’image d’un corps à corps plus âpre avec l’océan.
