Small Melanomas of the Choroid

We reviewed 38 cases of small choroidal melanomas on file in the Eye Pathology Laboratory of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami. Clinical and histopathological features of these cases were noted, and clinical follow-up information was obtained for 36 (95%) of the patients.

The Management of Choroidal Melanoma

There are many unanswered questions regarding the correct treatment of malignant melanoma of the choroid. The complexity of cancer is well recognized. Some feel chimera (an animalistic monster) would be a more appropriate term. But the problem for ophthalmology may lie in the Ptolemaic view that has prevented us from seeing the disease beyond the eye.

Amelanotic choroidal melanoma

In February, 2010, a 43-year-old woman presented to our clinic complaining of visual fl oaters in her left eye for the previous 2 months. She had a history of systemic hypertension, but was currently not on medication. Our patient was otherwise healthy. On examination, her visual acuity was 20/20 in each eye.

Cavitary choroidal melanoma

We report an unusual case of cavitary choroidal melanoma. The results of ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, and immunohistochemical studies are presented for a 38-year-old woman who developed an amelanotic tumor in the posterior choroid. B-scan ultrasonography disclosed intratumoral cavitations.

Choroidal melanoma metastatic to the contralateral choroid

To report metastasis of choroidal melanoma to the contralateral choroid.Interventional case report. In a 49-year-old Caucasian female, a primary choroidal melanoma, left eye, was diagnosed and treated with Ruthenium-106 plaque radiotherapy. The choroidal melanoma showed excellent regression with flattening of the mass and adjacent chorioretinal atrophy.

Metastatic Choroidal Melanoma

We studied the metastatic pattern of 41 patients initially referred with a primary choroidal melanoma who later developed widespread disease. In the order of frequency, the most common sites of metastatic involvement were the liver (56%), subcutaneous tissue (36.5%), and bone (7%).
