Past connections with the mainland structure patterns of insular species richness in a continental‐shelf archipelago (Aegean Sea, Greece)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 11, Issue 10, Page 5441-5458, May 2021., 2021
In the Aegean archipelago, the shorter lasting configurations of the Late Glacial Maximum promoted increased connectivity with the mainland, thereby counteracting processes promoting endemism. This result contrasts strongly with observations made on oceanic island, where longer lasting configurations largely shaped the current species diversity.

Pneumocystis diversity as a phylogeographic tool

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2009
Parasites are increasingly used to complement the evolutionary and ecological adaptation history of their hosts. Pneumocystis pathogenic fungi, which are transmitted from host-to-host via an airborne route, have been shown to constitute genuine host ...

The relationship between niche breadth and range size of beech (Fagus) species worldwide

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 48, Issue 5, Page 1240-1253, May 2021., 2021
Abstract Aim This work explores whether the commonly observed positive range size–niche breadth relationship exists for Fagus, one of the most dominant and widespread broad‐leaved deciduous tree genera in temperate forests of the Northern Hemisphere. Additionally, we ask whether the 10 extant Fagus species’ niche breadths and climatic tolerances are ...

An interpolated biogeographical framework for tropical Africa using plant species distributions and the physical environment

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 48, Issue 1, Page 23-36, January 2021., 2021
Abstract Aim Existing phytogeographical frameworks for tropical Africa lack either spatial completeness, unit definitions smaller than the regional scale or a quantitative approach. We investigate whether physical environmental variables can be used to interpolate floristically defined vegetation units, presenting an interpolated, hierarchical ...
