Lifetime of Energetic Electrons due to Their Interactions with Chorus Waves

Proceedings of the XXXVth URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium – GASS 2023, 2023
Energetic electrons in the Earth's magnetosphere can be dangerous to satellites. Chorus waves can cause the loss of energetic electrons in this area via pitch-angle scattering. To quantify the effect of chorus waves on energetic electrons, we calculate the bounce-averaged quasi-linear diffusion coefficients.

Modeling the Evolution of Chorus Waves into Hiss Waves in the Magnetosphere

Plasma Science and Technology, 2014
In this study, we analyze Cluster observations of whistler-mode chorus and hiss waves during the event of August 19-21, 2006. Chorus is present outside the plasmasphere and hiss occurs inside the plasmasphere. Using a recently constructed plasma boundary layer model, we perform a ray-tracing study on the propagation of chorus.

Bursty precipitation driven by chorus waves

Radiation Effects and Defects in Solids, 2011
The electron precipitation bursts have been shown to be a major sink for the radiation belt relativistic electrons. As underlying mechanism of such bursts, we propose particle scattering into the loss cone due to nonlinear resonance interaction between electrons and chorus.

Modeling electron microburst induced by chorus waves

2021 USNC-URSI Radio Science Meeting (USCN-URSI RSM), 2021
The interaction of chorus waves with energetic electrons is investigated using test particle simulation, for two cases respectively, one (for a ducted chorus) with an assumption of parallel propagation along a dipole field line (Figure 1), and the other one (for an unducted chorus) with a more physical wave propagation in the dipole field.

Pulsating aurora from electron scattering by chorus waves

Nature, 2018
Auroral substorms, dynamic phenomena that occur in the upper atmosphere at night, are caused by global reconfiguration of the magnetosphere, which releases stored solar wind energy. These storms are characterized by auroral brightening from dusk to midnight, followed by violent motions of distinct auroral arcs that suddenly break up, and the subsequent

Dependence of the quasi‐linear scattering rates on the wave normal distribution of chorus waves

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2009
The sensitivity of quasi‐linear scattering rates to the wave normal distribution of chorus waves is studied using the Full Diffusion Code newly developed at the University of California, Los Angeles. Scattering rates are computed for field‐aligned, oblique (∼20° wave normal angles), and highly oblique (∼40° wave normal angles) cases. For radiation belt

Determining the global coherence of chorus waves in the magnetosphere

2021
<p>Whistler mode chorus waves play a vital role in the Earth’s outer radiation belt dynamics through the cyclotron resonant pitch angle diffusion.     Recent numerical studies have shown that the temporal and spatial variability of wave growth parameters have universal ...

Statistical properties of lower band rising tone chorus waves

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2023
Lower-band chorus waves are known to play dual roles in radiation belt dynamics (electron acceleration and precipitation), and understanding their properties and excitation is very important. A systematic study of chorus waves properties in terms of background plasma parameters (electron perpendicular beta β ⊥

Laboratory simulation of magnetospheric chorus wave generation

Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 2016
Abstract Whistler mode chorus emissions with a characteristic frequency chirp are important magnetospheric waves, responsible for the acceleration of outer radiation belt electrons to relativistic energies and also for the scattering loss of these electrons into the atmosphere.

Scattering by chorus waves as the dominant cause of diffuse auroral precipitation

Nature, 2010
Earth's diffuse aurora occurs over a broad latitude range and is primarily caused by the precipitation of low-energy (0.1-30-keV) electrons originating in the central plasma sheet, which is the source region for hot electrons in the nightside outer magnetosphere. Although generally not visible, the diffuse auroral precipitation provides the main source
