The caliph and the falcons: a ninth‐century history from Iceland to Iraq
Early Medieval Europe, Volume 34, Issue 2, Page 299-322, May 2026.In the late ninth and early tenth centuries, an extraordinary number of falcons were given to the ʿAbbāsid caliphs in Baghdad, many of which were white. Gifts from competing dynasties in the northern provinces of the Caliphate, at least some of these birds were almost certainly gyrfalcons from near the Arctic Circle.

The Arabic Apocalypse of Peter (alternatively known as the Book of the Rolls) is probably one of the earliest – if not even the earliest text preserved – which was originally composed in Christian Arabic. Significantly, it is one of the most emblematic texts to have been composed after the emergence of Islam.
