Free opening rate is mainly determined by the performance of the ladle filler sand. High free opening rates of ladles are required in steel making to improve steel quality. Chromite ladle filler sands are one of the most widely used ladle filler sand. Several operative variables and materials characteristics affect the performance of the sands.

Fine milling of chromite sand in a 5-litre stirred ball mill
Minerals Engineering, 1994Abstract A 5-litre vertical batch stirred ball mill was used to study comminution characteristics. Chromite sand was used as the feed. A factorial design was prepared with the following parameters, which influence grinding in a stirred ball mill: pulp density, pin-tip velocity, ball density, and size.

Effect of Cr2O3 Addition on Sintering Behavior of Novel Chromite‐Based Ladle Filler Sand
steel research international, 2023Developing novel filler sands has garnered significant interest in improving the ladle's free‐opening rate and enhancing the cleanliness of high‐Mn and high‐Al steel. Laboratory studies explore the effect of adding Cr2O3 powder on the sintering behavior of chromite‐based filler sands.

Effect of Carbon on Sintering Behavior of Chromite‐Based Ladle Filler Sands
steel research internationalTo investigate the effect of carbon on the sintering behavior of ladle filler sands, laboratory experiments are carried out using chromite‐based filler sands and carbon (graphite) powders as well as liquid steel in an inert atmosphere at 1600 °C. It is found that the fine carbon powders result in an increase in angle of repose before sintering.
