Therapeutic Apheresis in Nigeria: A Multi‐Center Summary of Abstracts From the Inaugural Nigerian Society for Apheresis Scientific Meeting

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Therapeutic apheresis (TA) is an established treatment modality for hematologic, neurologic, and immunologic disorders, yet access remains severely limited in sub‐Saharan Africa. Donor apheresis, including platelet apheresis collection from healthy donors, represents an important complementary modality supporting blood product ...

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Critical incidents of people with kidney transplants: discovered situations

open access: yesO Mundo da Saúde, 2017
This study aimed to identify the positive and negative situations experienced by people with kidney transplantations, using the Critical Incident Technique. A study with a descriptive-type qualitative approach, using the Critical Incidents Technique. The

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Association between pre-existing chronic conditions and severity of first SARS-CoV-2 infection symptoms among adults living in Canada: a population-based survey analysis from January 2020 to August 2022

open access: yesBMC Public Health
Background Individuals living with chronic conditions (CC) typically have a higher risk of more severe outcomes when exposed to infection. Although many studies have investigated the relationship between CCs and COVID-19 severity, they are generally ...

Social disparities in the prevalence of multimorbidity – A register-based population study

open access: yesBMC Public Health, 2017
Background Prevalences of multimorbidity vary between European studies and several methods and definitions are used. In this study we examine the prevalence of multimorbidity in relation to age, gender and educational attainment and the association ...

RECTAL CONDITIONS IN CHRONIC CONSTIPATION [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association, 1917
Prima facie, nothing appears easier than the diagnosis of chronic constipation. Nevertheless, in not a few cases, it may be an exceedingly difficult task to determine accurately the etiologic factor. Many cases are due to mechanical causes which, not infrequently, are never recognized or even suspected.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

ENTEROCOLONIC CONDITIONS IN CHRONIC CONSTIPATION [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association, 1917
The fact that constipation has been and is under continuous discussion shows conclusively the lack of perfect knowledge emanating from any source. In this paper I shall include stasis and obstipation under the general term of constipation. No doubt there is an element of truth in the various explanations of constipation, but it may be safely asserted ...

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...
