Chronic contained rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm manifesting as lower extremity neuropathy [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Vascular Surgery, 2012
A 60-year-old man presented with intense right knee and thigh pain as well as weakness in his right lower extremity. Two months prior, he had sudden onset of severe low back pain and presented to his local physician, where he was diagnosed with lumbar spondylolisthesis.

Prevalence and Trajectory of Household Material Hardship Among Children With Advanced Cancer

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background/Objectives Families of children with advanced cancer living in poverty experience inferior outcomes including poor parent mental health and worse child quality of life. Household material hardship (HMH: food, housing, transportation, and/or utility insecurity) is a modifiable poverty exposure—and potential intervention target—that ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Platelets and galectins [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A major function of platelets is keeping the vascular system intact. Platelet activation at sites of vascular injury leads to the formation of a hemostatic plug.

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

"THE FIRST 24 HOURS OF LIFE MORTALITY AT FOUR TEACHING HOSPITALS IN SOUTH OF TEHRAN: PREVALENCE AND RISK FACTORS" [PDF]

open access: yesActa Medica Iranica, 2004
Despite reduction in infant mortality rate, neonatal mortality rate particularly during the first 24 hours of life is still high in developing countries. A cross-sectional study was performed to determine neonatal mortality prevalence during the first 24

Chronic tendon pathology: molecular basis and therapeutic implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Tendons are frequently affected by chronic pain or rupture. Many causative factors have been implicated in the pathology, which until relatively recently was under-researched and poorly understood.

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...
