ごく最近,慢性疲労症候群, (chronic fatigue syndrome: CFS)が新しい疾患概念として社会的な話題となっている.著しい疲労感のため日常生活すら不能にしてしまうという症状を主徴としたこの疾患は欧米では早くから知られていたが,心因を基盤とした精神科領域の疾患とみなされていた. 1930年頃より集団発生がみられ,一層注目されることとなった.その後,各種の感染症の後にこの病態を示す例があることが知られ,特にウイルス感染に伴う器質的疾患という見方が次第に台頭してきた.しかし今までのところいくつかの病因候補ウイルスはあげられているものの,未だ病因は不明である.
