Evaluation of the effect of sodium–glucose co‐transporter 2 inhibition with empagliflozin on morbidity and mortality of patients with chronic heart failure and a reduced ejection fraction: rationale for and design of the EMPEROR‐Reduced trial

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Heart Failure, 2019
Drugs that inhibit the sodium–glucose co‐transporter 2 (SGLT2) have been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalizations for heart failure in patients with type 2 diabetes.

The systematic guideline review: method, rationale, and test on chronic heart failure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Background: Evidence-based guidelines have the potential to improve healthcare. However, their de-novo-development requires substantial resources-especially for complex conditions, and adaptation may be biased by contextually influenced recommendations ...

Adipose Mesenchymal Stem Cell‐Derived Exosomes in Conjunction with Roflumilast Ameliorate Chronic Kidney Disease Through the Modulation of Fibrosis and Inflammation

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
The novelty of this study showed that the injection of exosomes produced from ADMSCs in combination with Roflumilast poses a more favorable therapeutic outcome for CKD induced by Adriamycin, compared to therapy with exosomes or Roflumilast alone. Roflumilast and exosomes treatment lowered the expression of the apoptotic, fibrotic, and inflammatory ...

Soleus Muscle as a Surrogate for Health Status in Human Heart Failure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We propose the hypothesis that soleus muscle function may provide a surrogate measure of functional capacity in patients with heart failure. We summarize literature pertaining to skeletal muscle as a locus of fatigue and present our recent findings ...

Robocasting of a Water‐Based Biopolymer/WO3 Nanopowder Paste as a Precursor to Tungsten Carbide Lattices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates a novel, additive manufacturing approach to produce complex, porous tungsten carbide structures using water‐based direct ink writing/robocasting. Leveraging a modified commercial printer and heat treatment, the process yields lightweight, electrically conductive 3D architectures capable of supporting a mechanical load.

Influence of diabetes on cardiac resynchronization therapy in heart failure patients: a meta-analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is an independent risk factor of increased morbidity and mortality in patients with heart failure. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), a pacemaker-based therapy for dyssynchronous heart failure, improves cardiac ...

Soft Beats: A Dielectric Elastomer‐Based Ventricular Assist Device for Next‐Gen Heart Failure Management

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The dielectric elastomer‐based electropneumatic device (DE‐EPD) is a vacuum‐assisted ventricular assist device (VAD) that delivers high performance (85 mmHg, 6.8 L min−1) with low power consumption. Unlike traditional motor‐driven VADs, it is lightweight, quiet, energy‐efficient, and provides pulsatile flow. Validated in a simulated circulation system,
