Coronary Chronic Total Occlusion
Cardiology Clinics, 2010Chronic total coronary occlusions (CTOs) are a frequent finding in patients with coronary disease and remain one of the most challenging target lesion subsets for intervention. CTOs have been reported in approximately one-third of patients undergoing diagnostic coronary angiography.

Many studies showed that successful recanalization of chronic total occlusion (CTO) provides an improvement of long-term outcome and left ventricular ejection fraction, electrical stability of the myocardium, increased tolerance to future coronary events, and last but not least an improvement in quality of life.

Chronic total occlusion (CTO) is defined as a total occlusion with either known duration of more than 3 months or presence of bridging collaterals. CTO has certain favorable and unfavorable characteristics which should be looked for in detail during angiography.

Chronic Total Coronary Occlusions
Cardiology Clinics, 2006Chronic total coronary occlusions (CTO) occur in up to one-third of patients undergoing coronary angiography. Indications for opening CTOs include relief of angina, improving left ventricular function, decreasing the need for coronary artery bypass surgery, and improved long-term survival.

Chronic total occlusions (CTOs) remain the most technically challenging and time-consuming subset of coronary artery lesions to treat with percutaneous intervention (PCI). Particular difficulties may be encountered in crossing and dilating the lesion, whilst the rates of restenosis are higher than other lesions even after successful PCI.
