Epitypification of Merismopedia tranquilla (Cyanobacteria) prompts phylogenetic reassessment of the genus and the description of two morphologically similar genera. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Phycol
Abstract The genus Merismopedia is morphologically characterized by its distinctive colony arrangement yet exhibits considerable variability among species. Recent studies suggested that Merismopedia is polyphyletic, and its most likely true lineage was provisionally placed within the Microcystaceae. However, the available molecular data for most of the

Taxonomic History and State of Knowledge of the Marine Species in Nostocales (Cyanoprokaryote) From the Mexican Atlantic. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
In this manuscript we contribute a revision of Cyanoprokaryotes Nostocales in the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean; the list of species was updated taxonomically. Also, the historical analysis of their taxonomy was carried out. ABSTRACT Cyanoprokaryotes are organisms that perform oxygenic photosynthesis.

Four novel taxa of cyanobacteria from a unique thermal cave habitat in Vromoner Canyon, Albania. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Phycol
Abstract Thermal and cave habitats on nearly all continents have been a substantial source of new cyanobacterial genotypes and morphotypes that expanded with the dawn of the era of molecular phylogenetics. In this study, we investigated the cyanobacterial flora of an extreme habitat of recently discovered caves with sulfur‐rich thermal springs, using ...

The Desert in Bottles: The Culturable Microbiome of the Atacama Desert's Grit Crust. [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol Rep
The grit crust represents a unique biocrust type of the coastal Atacama Desert. Cyanobacteria, green algae and free‐living fungi were isolated along a fog gradient. Phylogenetic relationships indicated novel taxa and framed an indigenous microbiome. Microclimate and soil data support functional groups related to sites.

A Minority of Desert Cyanobacteria and Algae Is Responsible for the Bulk of CO2 Fixation. [PDF]

open access: yesPhysiol Plant
ABSTRACT Cyanobacteria and algae are the major photosynthetic organisms in deserts because they survive desiccation, high solar radiation and extreme temperature fluctuations better than other plants. Under favourable conditions, desert cyanobacteria and algae evidently photosynthesise.

A glimpse into darkness: Diversity of culturable cyanobacteria, green algae and fungi from subaerial cave biofilms. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Phycol
Abstract Caves and hypogean environments provide stable microclimates characterized by uniform temperatures, constant humidity, and low light levels. In such sites, extremely low light irradiance can support the growth of subaerial biofilms (SABs) dominated by unique photosynthetic communities of cyanobacteria accompanied by chlorophytes, heterotrophic

Effect of desiccation on envelopes of the cyanobacteriumChroococcidiopsissp. (Chroococcales) [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Phycology, 1996
Chroococcidiopsis sp. cells present hypolithically in quartz flints collected in the Negev Desert (Israel) and in wet and desiccated laboratory cultures were examined by light and transmission electron microscopy. The composition of Chroococcidiopsis cell envelopes was characterized by cytochemical tests for detection of sporopollenin-like compounds ...

Planktic Cyanobacteria from São Paulo State, Brazil: Chroococcales [PDF]

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Botânica, 2004
The biodiversity studies of planktic cyanobacteria started in 1997 with intensive collecting in different water bodies of Sao Paulo State. Due to the problems brougth by eutrophication and cyanobacterial blooms, the samplings were concentrated in reservoirs of Alto Tiete region that supply drinking water to millions of people.
