Chronobiological Effect on the Reproductive Behavior of Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera: Calliphoridae)

open access: yesJournal of Medical Entomology, 2021
Abstract The most widely used entomological method of determining the time since death (minimum postmortem interval, mPMI) has been calculating the developmental time of blow flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) on the deceased body. However, because blow flies are known to be diurnal, nocturnal oviposition has been excluded from standard mPMI

Insects and Survival: A Review of Primary and Secondary Defense Strategies

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Based on a review of three decades of literature, insect defense mechanisms are classified into primary (I) and secondary (II) mechanisms of behavioral, morphological, and chemical nature. These mechanisms have been recorded in 22 (I) and 20 (II) orders, respectively.

Cooling and freezing effects on development of flies of forensic importance

open access: yesEntomoBrasilis, 2019
. Cooling and freezing experiments were carried out at Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz / RJ). Flies colonies were established from specimens collected at the campus using a baited trap, as described for the species: Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann ...

Spectral Characterization of the Life Stages and Physiological Responses of Diatraea saccharalis Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Larvae Parasitized by Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 174, Issue 5, Page 436-452, May 2026.
Hyperspectral proximal sensing was used to characterize the life stages and physiological responses of Diatraea saccharalis and to detect parasitism by Cotesia flavipes. Distinct spectral signatures differentiated eggs, larval instars, pupae, and adults, as well as live, dead, and parasitized larvae.

Some ultrastructural superficial changes in house fly (Diptera: Muscidae) and blow fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) larvae induced by eucalyptol oil Algumas alterações ultraestruturais superficiais nas larvas da mosca doméstica (Diptera: Muscidae) e da mosca varejeira (Diptera: Calliphoridae) induzidas pelo óleo de eucalipto

open access: yesRevista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de São Paulo, 2004
The ultrastructural superficial changes in third instar house fly (Musca domestica) and blow fly (Chrysomya megacephala) induced by eucalyptol oil were observed using scanning electron microscopy.

Decomposition Dynamics of an Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus morio) Carcass in a Tropical Forest: Implications for Conservation Practices

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
We documented the complete decomposition process of a wild Bornean orangutan carcass in a lowland dipterocarp forest in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. This represents the first detailed observation of great ape decomposition in Borneo. Our study provides a rare insight into the often‐overlooked process of carcass breakdown and decomposition in tropical ...

Capture of Caliptrate flies with different breeding substrates on beaches in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 1993
Muscidae flies belonging to four Familia and 13 species in a total number of 3.652 specimens were collected from beaches at Ilha do Governador, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil using different breeding substrates, and subsequently bred in the laboratory.

Population dynamics, life stage and ecological modeling in Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In this study we investigated the population dynamics of Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) with laboratory experiments, employing survival analysis and stage structure mathematical models, emphasizing survival among life stages.

Lords of the flies: dipteran migrants are diverse, abundant and ecologically important

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 4, Page 1635-1659, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Insect migrants are hugely abundant, with recent studies identifying the megadiverse order Diptera as the major component of many migratory assemblages. Despite this, their migratory behaviour has been widely overlooked in favour of more ‘charismatic’ migrant insects such as butterflies, dragonflies, and moths.
