Fluye inicialmente en sentido O-E y luego toma rumbo S-N hasta su desembocadura en el río Chubut. En la afluencia del arroyo Pescado, el río Tecka toma el nombre de río Gualjaina dando nombre a la cuenca del río Tecka-Gualjaina de 5.318 km2.
