Simulation of Churning Losses in Geared Box

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014
Relative experiments show that churning causes dominant power losses in geared box, which has an important influence on dynamic efficiency assessment of the driving system. This paper put forward a simulation model of churning losses and compared the simulation results with theoretical value.

CFD Simulation for Reduction of Oil Churning Loss and Windage Loss on Aeroengine Transmission Gears

Volume 1: Aircraft Engine; Ceramics; Coal, Biomass and Alternative Fuels; Controls, Diagnostics and Instrumentation; Education; Electric Power; Awards and Honors, 2009
In recent years, the demand for power generation capacity has increased considerably due to the electric drive of air conditioners and so on in the engines of civil aircraft. Therefore, it is estimated that power losses may increase in the gearbox because of generators and pumps that in turn augment fuel consumption.

Influence of Aerated Lubricants on Gear Churning Losses–An Engineering Model

Tribology Transactions, 2011
It is currently assumed that churning losses can be described by using only two physical parameters representative of the lubricant properties, i.e., density and viscosity. To verify this hypothesis, a number of transient measurements were carried out on a specific gear test rig over a range of oil temperatures.

390. The estimation of losses of butterfat in churning

Journal of Dairy Research, 1949
The Bird & Derby method of calculating percentage butterfat loss in buttermilk is in error because it assumes that all the buttermilk in the granules at draining is retained in the buttermilk, whereas much of it is washed out in the wash water. Lactose estimations in butter and buttermilk confirm Udy's finding that butter contains about 10% of ...

A 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling of the Churning Loss and Oil Pattern in a Single-Stage Gearbox

SAE technical paper series
Modern gearboxes are meticulously engineered with three primary objectives: enhancing load-carrying capacity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), and optimizing efficiency.

Churning losses of spiral bevel gears at high rotational speed

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2019
In the present study, no-load losses of different splash lubricated spiral bevel gears were measured. The authors used a specific test rig, and a set of gears, to investigate churning losses at higher tangential speeds: up to 60 m/s. An uncommon behavior of the drag torque was highlighted: the torque increased with the rotational speed until a local ...

Numerical Modeling of Churning Power Loss of Gear System Based on Moving Particle Method

, 2020
Churning power losses are an important portion of transmission load-independent power losses, especially in high-speed condition and dip-lubricated gearboxes with high immersion depth. Generally, it is difficult to calculate the churning power losses due

Manuscript Research on Dynamic Characteristics of Oil Churning and Torque Loss of Automatic Shift Gearbox

2025 6th International Conference on Mechatronics Technology and Intelligent Manufacturing (ICMTIM)
As the key component of the loader, the automatic shift gearbox is of great significance. The oil churning characteristics and torque loss of the gearbox determine the stability of the transmission system. In this paper, based on the moving particle semi-

A study of churning losses in dip-lubricated spur gears

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering, 1999
Churning losses contribute significantly, both to overall inefficiency and to oil heating, in many dip-lubricated transmission systems, notably in automotive applications. For this reason, a reasonably accurate estimate of churning loss is often desirable at the design stage.
