Summary Chylous ascites of unknown cause occurred in female siblings before the age of one year; both improved after treatment consisting of paracenteses and low-fat diets. This experience gives further support for conservative therapy of this unusual condition, pending future clarification as to etiology and pathogenesis.

Laparotomy revealed chylous ascites in the abdominal cavity. The patient made a successful recovery following treatment with total parenteral nutrition. No cause of the chylous ascites was found.
