Urbanisation and Lockdown Impact on Airborne Fungal Communities in Tropical Landscapes: A Comparative Study of Urban and Peri-Urban Environments. [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol Rep
This study assessed the distribution of fungal bioaerosols in tropical urban and peri‐urban environments. Using a six‐stage Andersen cascade impactor and a Bayesian neural network, fungal concentrations were predicted with an accuracy of 76.87%. It highlights the role of environmental factorsin fungal dispersion, associated respiratory risks, and ...

The long road to a sustainable banana trade

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 5, Issue 5, Page 662-671, September 2023., 2023
Bananas are the world's most popular dessert fruit and a staple starch crop for millions in low‐ and middle‐income countries. The banana export trade that supplies North America, Europe, and other wealthy nations has a history fraught with exploitation and conflict.

Predator response to the coloured eyespots and defensive posture of Colombian four‐eyed frogs

open access: yesJournal of Evolutionary Biology, Volume 36, Issue 7, Page 1040-1049, July 2023., 2023
Using stationary artificial frogs exposed to wild predators, we tested whether the eyespot/colour markings and defensive posture present in the putative deimatic display of Colombian four‐eyed frogs, and their combination, provide protection from predation without a sudden change in appearance.

Color polymorphism in the Cuban endemic livebearing fish Limia vittata (Teloestei, Poeciliidae): Potential roles of sexual and natural selection

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Habitat variation is the most important factor in maintaining color polymorphism in L. vittata. Salinity levels could be indirectly responsible for maintaining different color morphs in this species, likely due to the regulatory effect of saline gradients on predation regimes.

Effects of wild, semi‐captive, and captive management on male Chiricahua leopard frog sperm quality with implications for conservation breeding programs

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 5, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
The Chiricahua leopard frog (Lithobates chiricahuensis) is a threatened species endemic to the southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. Here, we compare males in captive and semi‐captive breeding programs to populations to wild males. Sperm quantity, but not quality, differs between wild, semi‐captive, and captive male Chiricahua leopard frogs ...

Energetic Physiology of the Caribbean Estuarine Clam Polymesoda arctata (Deshayes, 1854) Exposed to Different Environmental Conditions under Laboratory

open access: yesAquaculture Research, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
The estuarine clam Polymesoda arctata is one of the commercially important bivalves of the Caribbean, which is currently considered endangered by overexploitation and habitat loss. With the purpose of gain knowledge about its environmental requirements for aquaculture and restocking purposes, its energetic physiology performance was evaluated under ...

Defensa comunitaria y culturas del terror: Crimen organizado y violencia de Estado en comunidades originarias de Guerrero, México

open access: yesThe Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology, Volume 27, Issue 4, Page 564-574, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Rich in raw materials, the state of Guerrero, Mexico, is one of the main enclaves of opium production, mineral extraction, and a focus for the multiplication of armed actors in Latin America, which, together with the overlapping of counterinsurgent violence in the past, post‐colonial violence and the militarization of the policies of the so ...

Two temperate seagrass meadows are negligible sources of methane and nitrous oxide

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 67, Issue S2, Page S193-S207, November 2022., 2022
Abstract Seagrasses are globally important ecosystems that can help mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon (C). The net impact seagrass meadows have on the climate, however, also depends on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes. By not accounting for CH4 and N2O fluxes, we may be overestimating or underestimating the true C sequestration

Roadkill patterns in Latin American birds and mammals

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 31, Issue 9, Page 1756-1783, September 2022., 2022
Abstract Aim Roads are a major threat for wildlife, degrading habitat and causing mortality via wildlife–vehicle collisions. In Latin America, the conjunction of high biodiversity and a rapidly expanding road network is reason for concern. We introduce an approach that combines species traits and habitat preferences to describe vulnerability and map ...
