Chance, Choice, and Cichlids

2021
The Cichlidae, one of the most diverse families of vertebrates, is the subject of the volume entitled “The Behavior, Ecology and Evolution of Cichlid Fishes” which we introduce here. Cichlids are major members of their communities. They are socioeconomically important in fisheries, aquaculture, and the ornamental trade.

Games Cichlids Play

Science, 2001
The Cichlid Fishes Nature's Grand Experiment in Evolution. By George W. Barlow . Perseus, Cambridge, MA, 2000. 351 pp. $28, C$42.50. ISBN 0-7382-0376-9. Although it emphasizes reproductive behavior and parental care over other aspects of cichlid biology, this lively account of an ...

Sound Production by Cichlid Fishes

Science, 1965
Adults of three cichlid species, Hemichromis bimaculatus Gill, Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum (Günther), and Pterophyllum sp., produce sounds of apparent biological significance. Both sexes of H.

Hermaphroditism in Cichlid Fishes [PDF]

open access: possible, 1975
I would like to discuss a peculiar type of hermaphroditism, which has been discovered in the ‘Mbuna’. The Mbuna are a group of cichlid fishes endemic to Lake Malawi. They are unique in various aspects of taxonomy, so that Fryer (1959), who made a fundamental ecological study of them, proposed to grant them the rank of a tribus. The Mbuna are small fish

Predator-induced neophobia in juvenile cichlids

Oecologia, 2015
Predation is an important but often fluctuating selection factor for prey animals. Accordingly, individuals plastically adopt antipredator strategies in response to current predation risk. Recently, it was proposed that predation risk also plastically induces neophobia (an antipredator response towards novel cues).

Scale morphology in Malawian cichlids

Journal of Fish Biology, 1998
The morphology of 24 endemic cichlid species from Lake Malawi was studied with scanning electron microscopy. Several structures possibly of value for taxonomic and evolutionary studies were discovered. Six types of scale shapes and three types of interradial denticles were detected.

Chemical communication in cichlids: A mini-review

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 2015
The family Cichlidae is well-known for pair-formation, parental care, territoriality, elaborate courtship and social organization. Do cichlids use chemical communication to mediate any of these behaviours? Early studies suggest that parent cichlids can discriminate between conspecific and heterospecific wrigglers (but not eggs) using olfactory cues ...

Visualizing Speciation in Artificial Cichlid Fish

Artificial Life, 2006
The Cichlid Speciation Project (CSP) is an ALife simulation system for investigating open problems in the speciation of African cichlid fish. The CSP can be used to perform a wide range of experiments that show that speciation is a natural consequence of certain biological systems. A visualization system capable of extracting the history of speciation
