Axes of visual adaptation in the ecologically diverse family Cichlidae [PDF]
The family Cichlidae contains approximately 2000 species that live in diverse freshwater habitats including murky lakes, turbid rivers, and clear lakes from both the Old and New Worlds. Their visual systems are similarly diverse and have evolved specific sensitivities that differ along several axes of variation.

Sensitivity of Cichlasoma facetum (Cichlidae, Pisces) to Metals
Although most of the existent information regarding the sensitivity of fish to pollutants has aimed to the study of Holartic species (Ramamoorthy and Baddaloo 1995), contributions on organisms from other types of ecological communities belonging to Neotropical environments have been recently undertaken considering native and introduced species ...

Independent evolution of the specialized pharyngeal jaw apparatus in cichlid and labrid fishes
Background Fishes in the families Cichlidae and Labridae provide good probable examples of vertebrate adaptive radiations. Their spectacular trophic radiations have been widely assumed to be due to structural key innovation in pharyngeal jaw apparatus ...

Systematics and historical biogeography of Greater Antillean Cichlidae [PDF]
A molecular phylogenetic analysis recovers a pattern consistent with a drift vicariance scenario for the origin of Greater Antillean cichlids. This phylogeny, based on mitochondrial and nuclear genes, reveals that clades on different geographic regions diverged concurrently with the geological separation of these areas.

Improving Whole Biodiversity Monitoring and Discovery With Environmental DNA Metagenomics
ABSTRACT Environmental DNA (eDNA) metagenomics sequences all DNA molecules present in environmental samples and has the potential of identifying virtually any organism from which they are derived. However, due to unacceptable levels of false positives and negatives, this approach is underexplored as a tool for biodiversity monitoring across the tree of
