ResumenLos ciliados conforman un grupo de aproximadamente 8 000 especies. En la actualidad el número de especies registradas en México asciende a 959 que corresponde a un 12% del total de especies descritas a nivel mundial. Se analiza el aspecto histórico de los estudios de ciliados, bajo las perspectivas taxonómica y ecológica.
