The aim of this study was to evaluate characteristic findings and functional outcome of this rare type of retinal vascular occlusion in a large patient series.A retrospective chart review of all patients with a cilioretinal artery obstruction (CAO) seen at the University Eye Clinic Mainz (Germany) over a ten-year period between 1/1999 and 12/2008 was ...

Cilioretinal Arteries and Retinal Arterial Occlusion
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1979A series of 187 cases of retinal artery occlusion was reviewed. 107 of which were central retinal artery occlusions (CRAO). Of the 107 cases, 28 (26%) showed some degree of macular sparing owing to a patent cilioretinalartery. The patients with cilioretinal sparing regained variable degrees of visual acuity, depending on the amount of the ...

Cilioretinal artery occlusion in hemochromatosis
Archivos de la Sociedad Española de Oftalmología (English Edition), 2015We report a case of a 31 year-old woman with a sudden visual loss due to a cilioretinal artery occlusion. The physical examinination showed hepatomegaly. Serum iron and ferritin and transferrin saturation were unusually high. The doppler scan of carotid arteries showed no relevant signs of atheromatous disease. Dilated cardiomiopaty was revealed in the

Cilioretinal artery occlusion associated with cisplatin
Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice, 2018Introduction Cancer is an important risk factor for venous and arterial thromboembolic events. Treatment with chemotherapy was associated with a 6.5-fold increase in the risk of thromboembolic events. Here, we present a patient with cilioretinal artery emboli during cisplatin-based therapy.

Cilioretinal artery occlusion during coronary catheterization
Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavica, 1999To report on a patient with cilioretinal artery occlusion during cardiac catheterization.A 51-year-old man complained of blurred vision in the left eye immediately following cardiac catheterization. Visual acuity was 6/12 and the eye had a dense central scotoma.Mild retinal whitening of the posterior pole and segmented filling of the cilio-retinal ...

Cilioretinal Artery Occlusion with Central Retinal Vein Occlusion
Optometry and Vision Science, 1999Combined cilioretinal artery and retinal vein occlusions are infrequently documented retinal vascular disorders of speculative origin. Occlusion of the cilioretinal artery is believed to result from either mechanical compression of the artery as a result of an increase in venous pressure or from a reduction in perfusion pressure in both the ...

The cilioretinal artery was first described by Muller [1] in 1856. Its existence is a congenital anomaly. It belongs to the posterior ciliary artery system, so it usually arises from the peripapillary choroid or directly from one of the short posterior ciliary arteries; this origin has important clinical implications, as discussed below.

Cilioretinal Artery Occlusion Associated with Oral Contraceptives
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1977Visual acuity in a 17-year-old girl who took norethindrone with mestranol (Ortho-Novum) for eight months decreased to 6/9 (20/30) in the left eye. Ophthalmoscopically, retinal edema was temporal to the disk and white plaques were in each of two branches of cilioretinal artery.

OCCLUSION OF THE CILIORETINAL ARTERY
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1948IN CLOSURE of the central retinal artery, sparing of the macula with preservation of central vision due to the presence of a cilioretinal artery is a well recognized entity. The converse, closure of the cilioretinal artery with a normal functioning central retinal artery, has seldom been observed.
