The Unexpected Discovery of Paleocene? Coals in Outcrops Thought to Be Cambrian, Al Huqf, Oman

ABSTRACT Two brown organic deposits were encountered whilst investigating kaolinitic claystones thought to occur at the base of a Cambrian formation at outcrop. The age of these organic deposits is probably Paleocene from palynology. Organic petrography shows that they are subbituminous coals with some oil source potential.

First records of Boreolithothamnion astragaloi and Boreolithothamnion soriferum (Hapalidiales, Rhodophyta) from Japan with the characterization of Boreolithothamnion japonicum from Hokkaido based on molecular and morpho‐anatomical analyses

SUMMARY Boreolithothamnion is a non‐geniculate coralline red algal genus distributed in cold to warm temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Since the establishment of the genus in 2023, following the redefinition of the genus Lithothamnion, its species diversity and distribution of Boreolithothamnion in Japan needed to be reassessed.
