Circumnutations of Arabidopsis thaliana Seedlings

Biological Rhythm Research, 1997
The hypocotyls of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings exhibit circumnutations with different frequency ranges. Using a picture-analysis system, two types of oscillations were distinguished, short period (SPN) and long period nutations (LPN). The period of the SPNs is between 20 and 60 min, decreases with increasing temperature (between 20° and 30°C; Q 10 of

Gravity Perception and Circumnutation in Plants

Advances in Space Biology and Medicine, 1991
Publisher Summary This chapter covers aspects that are especially germane for understanding the mechanism of circumnutations. Circumnutation, the ubiquitous pattern of oscillating growth displaced by all elongating plant organs, has been studied for over a century.

Circumnutation augmented in clinostatted plants by a tactile stimulus

Advances in Space Research, 1981
Dark-grown, 4-day old, Helianthus annuus seedlings were rotated for 20 hr on horizontal clinostats to minimize the amplitude of circumnutation. Then a Plexiglas sheet was placed gently against the tip of the cotyledons. By time-lapse video imaging (using intermittent IR illumination to which the plants were insensitive) movements of the clinostatted ...

Electrical potential oscillations – movement relations in circumnutating sunflower stem and effect of ion channel and proton pump inhibitors on circumnutation

Physiologia Plantarum, 2014
The physiological control and molecular mechanism of circumnutation (CN) has not yet been fully understood. To gain information on the CN mechanism, the relationship between the changes of electrical potential and movement in the circumnutating sunflower stem and effect of ion channels and proton pump inhibitors on CN parameters were evaluated.

Application of a Theory for Circumnutations to Geotropic Movements

Physiologia Plantarum, 1968
AbstractFrom a previously published theory (Israelsson and Johnsson 1967) for circumnutations in Helianthus annuus it is possible to predict the geotropical curvatures of the hypocotyls. This extension of the theory is given in the present paper and some geotropical experiments are performed and discussed. The agreement between the theory and the ...

Experimental investigation of circumnutation-inspired penetration in sand

Bioinspiration & Biomimetics
Abstract Probes that penetrate soil are used in fields such as geotechnical engineering, agriculture, and ecology to classify soils and characterize their properties in situ. Conventional tools such as the Cone Penetration Test (CPT) often face challenges due to the lack of reaction force needed to penetrate stiff or dense soil layers ...

Circumnutations as a penetration strategy in a plant-root-inspired robot

2016 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), 2016
In this paper, we present a study on peculiar plant root movements, named circumnutations, adopted by plants as an efficient strategy to penetrate the soil and implemented in robotic roots to improve their performance in exploration tasks. The robotic root is able to bend and interact with soil owing to a soft actuation mechanism based on the ...

Measurement of circumnutation in maize roots.

Microgravity science and technology, 1995
The movement of growing primary roots of maize was measured using a computer driven video-digitizer system. Real time measurements with two perpendicularly mounted video cameras permit measurements of growth movements in three dimensions and allow precise control of growth experiments.

Circumnutations without gravity: a two-oscillator model.

Journal of gravitational physiology : a journal of the International Society for Gravitational Physiology, 2000
Helical growth movements termed circumnutations occur in a number of different plant organs. The underlying mechanism are complicated. They consist of an endogenous as well as an erogenous component. Since circumnutations in sunflower hypocotyls occur also under gravity free conditions in Space, gravity is not necessary for them to arise.
