Gut microbiota–derived short‐chain fatty acids regulate group 3 innate lymphoid cells in HCC

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Abstract Background and Aims Type 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s) are essential for host defense against infection and tissue homeostasis. However, their role in the development of HCC has not been adequately confirmed. In this study, we investigated the immunomodulatory role of short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs) derived from intestinal microbiota in ILC3

Therapeutic effects of serum extracellular vesicles in liver fibrosis

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Vesicles, 2018
The lack of approved therapies for hepatic fibrosis seriously limits medical management of patients with chronic liver disease. Since extracellular vesicles (EVs) function as conduits for intercellular molecular transfer, we investigated if EVs from ...

Liver Cancer: Connections with Obesity, Fatty Liver, and Cirrhosis.

open access: yesAnnual Review of Medicine, 2016
The burden of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer, is steadily growing because obesity, type 2 diabetes, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are replacing viral- and alcohol-related liver disease as major ...

The Immune Microenvironment: New Therapeutic Implications in Organ Fibrosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review summarizes recent advances in understanding the immune microenvironment's role in fibrosis, focusing on phenotypic/functional alterations of immune cells and their dynamic interactions with other cellular constituents within tissues. The authors further explore therapeutic opportunities and challenges in targeting immune microenvironment ...

Relationship between NAFLD and coronary artery disease: A Mendelian randomization study

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Abstract Background and Aims There is an ongoing debate on whether NAFLD is an active contributor or an innocent bystander in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of the present study was to assess the causal relationship between NAFLD and CAD.

Targeting Seipin to Alleviate Hepatic Steatosis in Zebrafish (Danio Rerio)

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Seipin plays a crucial role in lipid metabolism. Seipin overexpression ameliorates high‐fat‐diet‐induced hepatic steatosis and enhances growth in zebrafish. Mechanistically, Seipin interacts with Plin2 to promote Plin2 degradation and enhances phosphatidylcholine synthesis via Seipin/CCTα/CHPT interactions.

Intestinal peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor α‐fatty acid‐binding protein 1 axis modulates nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Abstract Background and Aims Peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor α (PPARα) regulates fatty acid transport and catabolism in liver. However, the role of intestinal PPARα in lipid homeostasis is largely unknown. Here, intestinal PPARα was examined for its modulation of obesity and NASH. Approach and Results Intestinal PPARα was activated and fatty

Beta-blockers to prevent gastroesophageal varices in patients with cirrhosis. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
BACKGROUND: Nonselective beta-adrenergic blockers decrease portal pressure and prevent variceal hemorrhage. Their effectiveness in preventing varices is unknown.

FIB‐3 index as a novel age‐independent predictor of liver fibrosis and prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma patients undergoing hepatectomy

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
Fibrosis‐3 index (FIB‐3) can stratify the risk of the survival and the recurrence‐free survival. The FIB‐3 index is a reliable, age‐independent tool for assessing liver fibrosis and prognosis in HCC patients post‐hepatectomy. Its use may improve clinical outcomes and support personalized treatment strategies. Abstract Background Liver fibrosis is a key

NAFLD‐related hepatocellular carcinoma: The growing challenge

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Risk and protective factors for NAFLD‐related hepatocellular carcinoma Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common cause of cancer‐related mortality and morbidity worldwide. With the obesity pandemic, NAFLD‐related HCC is contributing to the burden of disease exponentially.
