Percutaneous fetoscopic spina bifida repair: effect on ambulation and need for postnatal cerebrospinal fluid diversion and bladder catheterization

open access: yesUltrasound in Obstetrics &Gynecology, Volume 58, Issue 4, Page 582-589, October 2021., 2021
Abstract Objective A trial comparing prenatal with postnatal open spina bifida (OSB) repair established that prenatal surgery was associated with better postnatal outcome. However, in the trial, fetal surgery was carried out through hysterotomy. Minimally invasive approaches are being developed to mitigate the risks of open maternal–fetal surgery.

Residual disease after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for oesophageal cancer: locations undetected by endoscopic biopsies in the preSANO trial

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 13, Page 1791-1800, December 2020., 2020
Remnant cancer missed by endoscopic biopsies was located in the mucosa in two‐thirds of patients with residual disease after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT). One‐third of patients had residual disease in the submucosa underneath a tumour‐free mucosa. The yield of biopsies in active surveillance after nCRT could be improved by sampling larger areas

Is out‐of‐hours cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis associated with complications?

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 10, Page 1313-1323, September 2020., 2020
Early surgery is recommended for acute cholecystitis. The study was performed to see whether surgery out of hours is associated with a higher risk of complications compared with surgery within office hours. There was a higher risk of complications for out‐of‐hours surgery, but it seemed to be due to factors other than time of day of surgery.

Reintervention or mortality within 90 days of bariatric surgery: population‐based cohort study

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 9, Page 1221-1230, August 2020., 2020
This population‐based study in five Nordic countries, including 49 977 patients, showed that older age and co‐morbidity increased the risk of reintervention or death within 90 days after bariatric surgery. Sex, surgical approach and hospital volume did not appear to influence this risk, but female sex and laparoscopic approach were associated with ...

Impact of technically qualified surgeons on laparoscopic colorectal resection outcomes: results of a propensity score‐matching analysis

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 3, Page 486-498, June 2020., 2020
The outcomes of 586 procedures performed or attended by surgeons certified by the Endoscopic Surgical Skill Qualification System (ESSQS) were compared with 842 procedures performed by surgeons without the ESSQS qualification. Attendance of ESSQS‐qualified surgeons led to superior outcomes in terms of duration of surgery, and operative complication and ...

Laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy with double‐flap technique versus laparoscopic subtotal gastrectomy for proximal early gastric cancer

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 2, Page 252-259, April 2020., 2020
Laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy with double‐flap technique is different from laparoscopic subtotal gastrectomy in terms of preventing problems involving the small intestine and anaemia after surgery for proximal early gastric cancer. However, these procedures are comparable for other outcomes, even though they are opposing procedures.

Population‐based study of anastomotic stricture rates after minimally invasive and open oesophagectomy for cancer

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 3, Issue 5, Page 634-640, October 2019., 2019
The risk of anastomotic stricture requiring dilatation after minimally invasive (239 patients) and open (1430 patients) oesophagectomy was compared in a population‐based setting. Endoscopic anastomotic dilatation was common, and the need for repeated dilatation was higher after minimally invasive surgery.

Multicentre study of surgical referral and outcomes of patients with benign colorectal lesions

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 3, Issue 5, Page 687-695, October 2019., 2019
This multicentre cohort study found that the majority of benign colorectal lesions referred for bowel resection in the Netherlands were classified as complex. Size was the most common reason for surgical referral, followed by a suspicion of invasive growth, difficult location and non‐lifting sign. Considering the substantial morbidity following surgery
