The Vulnerability of New Zealand Forage Plants to Incursions by New Pests, Pathogens and Weeds, and the Case for Greater Protection

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, Volume 69, Issue 1, February 2026.
We outline the diversity of pests, weeds and plant pathogens absent from New Zealand that threaten forage production, examine their potential import pathways, and outline the challenges of managing them should they arrive. The number and diversity of threats and pathways indicates ongoing incursions are inevitable.

Loss‐of‐Function Mutation in CER2‐LIKE1 Reduced Accumulation of Cuticular Wax and Susceptibility to Thrips in Welsh Onion

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 24, Issue 2, Page 871-883, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Cuticular waxes can form a hydrophobic barrier on aerial plant surfaces, which is essential for mediating plant‐environment interactions by providing protection against both biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, a cuticular wax mutant (gl) was identified and characterised in Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L.), exhibiting a functional ...

Management of Citrus Root Weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) on Florida Citrus with Soil-Applied Entomopathogenic Nematodes (Nematoda: Rhabditida)

open access: yesThe Florida Entomologist, 1999
The entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema carpocapsae Weiser and S. riobravis Cabanillas, Poiner and Raulston were compared as twice a year soil treatments for control of the west indian sugarcane root stalk borer weevil, Diaprepes abbreviatus (L.), and citrus root weevil, Pachnaeus litus (Germar).

Development of Nanocomposite Bioactive Diffusion Films (BDFs) Combined With Gamma Irradiation for Control of the Rice Weevil Sitophilus oryzae, a Stored Product Pest

open access: yesJournal of Food Science, Volume 91, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT The fumigant toxicity of 6 essential oils (EOs) (Mediterranean, Southern, citrus, cinnamon, Asian, and savory thyme), 2 citrus extracts (CEs: organic OCE and natural NCE), and 2 active formulations (microfluidized nanoemulsions AF‐1 and AF‐2) was investigated for control of rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae), a stored product pest.

The Citrus Root Weevils in Florida: An Extension Service Perspective

open access: yesThe Florida Entomologist, 1985
There are 5 species of root weevils that infest citrus in Florida. A ban on the use of existing effective persistant insecticides in the soil limits recommended Cooperative Extension Service control practices to: 1) maintenance of sound agronomic programs for vigorous growth of trees; 2) concentration of efforts on resets; 3) elimination of alternate ...

Phytochemical Analysis and Insecticidal Activity of Four Plant Extracts Against Maize Weevil and Larger Grain Borer

open access: yesInternational Journal of Agronomy, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Plant‐based biopesticides provide a sustainable alternative to synthetic insecticides for managing postharvest losses caused by maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais) and larger grain borer (Prostephanus truncatus). This study evaluated the phytochemical composition and insecticidal activity of methanolic extracts of Lantana camara, Citrus sinensis, Moringa

First Assessment of the Reproductive Potential of Spermophagus niger (Motschulsky, 1866) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) on Hibiscus asper Hook. f. (Malvales: Malvaceae) Seeds

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Spermophagus niger L. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is the main insect pest of Hibiscus sabdariffa seeds (Malvales: Malvaceae) during storage, with initial infestations occurring in the field. This study presents the first assessment of S. niger development on Hibiscus asper seeds (Malvales: Malvaceae), a wild and underutilized species widely distributed

Advice on animal and public health risks of insects reared on former foodstuffs as raw material for animal feed

open access: yesFood Risk Assess Europe, Volume 4, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract In the coming decades, there is expected to be a sharply increased demand for dietary proteins for humans and animals. As a result, there is an increasing focus on reared insects as a new source of protein. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV), the use of food chain residual flows such as former foodstuffs as

Diaprepes in Florida citrus: Past, present, and future.

open access: yesEDIS, 2023
In response to the recent resurgence of Diaprepes under a scenario where most citrus trees are infected with HLB, we have begun work to develop the needed tools and management recommendations to limit the damage it might cause.
