One or infinite optimal city sizes? In search of an equilibrium size for cities

The Annals of Regional Science, 2012
In this paper, the stylized assumption that one single “optimal” city size exists for all cities—achieved when marginal location costs equal marginal location benefits—is abandoned, as well as the opposite view that each city operates on its own cost and production curves, defining a specific optimal size. Instead, this work maintains the comparability

Road Endpoints and City Sizes

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2020
Abstract I examine the long-run effects of the timing of railroad construction on city sizes. I first present a stylized model that predicts that towns that are railroad end points for a longer period of time become persistently larger. I then show that, in a sample of Brazilian railroad towns, time as end point strongly predicts town

The Size, Scale, and Shape of Cities

Science, 2008
Despite a century of effort, our understanding of how cities evolve is still woefully inadequate. Recent research, however, suggests that cities are complex systems that mainly grow from the bottom up, their size and shape following well-defined scaling laws that result from intense competition for space.

City Size and Transportation Costs

Journal of Political Economy, 1973
A SIMPLE MODEL OF A CITY (METROPOLITAN AREA) IS CONSTRUCTED AND USED TO CALCULATE HOW TRANSPORTATION COSTS VARY WITH CITY SIZE. SIMPLIFYING THE BASIC ASSUMPTIONS MAKES THE MODEL MORE MANAGEABLE, WHICH ALLOWS EXPLICIT CALCULATION OF MAGNITUDES THAT WERE NOT CALCULATED IN THE MORE COMPLICATED AND GENERAL MODELS USED IN THE RECENT LITERATURE IN THIS AREA.

Medium size cities

Regional Science and Urban Economics, 1997
Abstract This paper investigates the role of medium size cities in economies, drawing on the experiences of Brazil, Japan, Korea, the USA and other countries. The paper argues that city size distributions are stable over time and that medium size cities are highly specialized, particularly in manufacturing activities, compared to metro areas.

The Size and Spacing of Cities

Geographical Review, 1958
T I wHE regular spacing of towns has often been noted. The distance between any two adjacent towns in the same size class fits fairly well the formula (P1P2)/D = A, in which Pi and P2 stand for the populations of the two towns and D for the distance between them and A is a constant for any given region.
