Smart structures and applications in civil engineering

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1996
This paper examines the issue of instrumentation for civil structures and in particular discusses the role of sensing systems in the evolution of the smart building concept. The sheer size of most structures of interest presents its own technological challenge in designing a suitable sensing architecture which will also conveniently address the area to

Dynamic monitoring of civil engineering structures

2015 3rd Experiment International Conference (exp.at'15), 2015
The paper describes two dynamic monitoring systems installed in civil engineering structures, a footbridge and a suspended stadium roof. These systems are used for characterization of environmental and operational effects and, in the limit, for the early detection of damage. Some examples of collected data and results are presented.

Aluminium Building and Civil Engineering Structures

1999
The design of aluminium structures in building and civil engineering applications is different from designing in traditional materials. This difference is based on the physical and mechanical properties of the material and the freedom of cross-sectional shape provided by the extrusion manufacturing process.

Monitoring of civil engineering structures

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
Civil engineering structures require geometrical monitoring to assure their integrity during their life time. The monitoring by geodetic devices or according to GPS technology is not always appropriate, sometimes it is unrealizable. Means for monitoring based on automatic geodetic measurements applying optical scanners are proposed.

Corrosion in civil engineering structures

Revue de Métallurgie, 2002
The civil engineering structures considered in this paper are reinforced concrete structures and cables. Corrosion tests are used to select the steel grades having the best corrosion resistance. Furthermore, electrochemical techniques, like the measurement of the electrode potential and of the polarization resistance, are applied to structures in ...
