Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

Balancing Hydrophobicity and Hydrophilicity: Dual Filler‐Engineered Proton Exchange Membranes for Durable, High‐Power Fuel Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Polarity‐matched Zr–MOFs program Nafion's nanoscale morphology during solution casting. Hydrophilic UiO‐66 preserves hydrated pathways, while hydrophobic UiO‐67 increases the proton hopping sites by densifying ionic clusters. Combining both fillers yields a membrane that delivers 176 mS cm−1 conductivity, reaches 1.46 W cm−2 under 200 kPa, and triples ...

Teatro folk e sciamanesimo in Corea

open access: yesAntropologia e Teatro
The exact date of birth of Korean theater is uncertain, but its origins can be traced back to ancient ceremonies, folkloric rites, and shamanic rituals that date back more than two thousand years. Theatrical forms can likely be identified in civil rites,

Bone‐Inspired Recyclable Composites for Damage‐Tolerant Circular Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bone‐inspired architected composites are developed by combining osteon‐like reinforcements with a recyclable Elium thermoplastic matrix. The hierarchical architecture redirects cracks and promotes energy dissipation, while enabling recovery of intact, aligned, load‐bearing reinforcement units that retain their original stiffness, revealing a route ...

Manumissio in ecclesia (prepustenie z otroctva pred cirkvou)

open access: yesPrávněhistorické studie
Roman legal sources record several methods of manumission of slaves, which have developed in roman civil and praetorian law. Justinian Code regulates one special method (manumissio in ecclesia) in two fragments, which was introduced by Emperor ...

Mechanics of Telson Ridges in Mantis Shrimp for Impact Analysis and Implications for Bioinspired Elastic Shell Designs

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The mantis shrimp telson reveals how ridged biological shields control deformation under impact. Inspired by this architecture, telson‐inspired ridged curved shells transform ridge geometry and macroscopic curvature into bidirectional snap‐through, tunable stiffness, and enhanced hysteretic energy dissipation for multifunctional architected materials ...

‘I won’t naturalize foreigners like crazy’: The Naturalization Campaign in Venezuela, 2004-2006

open access: yesEuropean Review of Latin American and Caribbean Studies, 2016
Between 2004 and 2006, more than 420,000 foreigners, many of them formerly undocumented immigrants, were granted Venezuelan nationality. This article presents the (historical) context, the Venezuelan immigration and nationality policies, and the three ...

Limits to the Hall Effect and Other Nonreciprocal Effects in Three‐Dimensional Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Comprehensive and fundamental bounds on nonreciprocal effects in three‐dimensional metamaterials are derived. They reveal that the effective Hall mobility cannot exceed the largest constituent mobility, that, under certain conditions, the Verdet constant cannot be enhanced, and that, for constituents with Hall coefficients of the same sign, the largest

Autonomous Folding of Soft Matter From Living Polymers

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Origami structures are endowed with “living” polymer creases that grow, remodel, and stiffen in response to nutrient solutions. This post‐fabrication growth enables autonomous folding, iterative regrowth, and mechanical tuning involving origami assemblies, such as cranes, Miura‐ori tessellations, rigid and non‐rigid square‐twist patterns, establishing ...

Spectrally Coordinated Plasmonic–Photothermal Photocatalysts for Mineralization of Mixed Indoor VOCs Under White LED Illumination

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A plasmonic–photothermal–photocatalytic hybrid comprising Cu(II)‐grafted TiO2, yolk–shell Au@SiO2, and reduced graphene oxide sheets (CuT/AuSi‐GS) harvests full‐spectrum white light‐emitting diode (LED) light via complementary photocatalytic oxidation, localized surface‐plasmon‐resonance‐induced electric‐field enhancement, and photothermal acceleration.
