Smart structures and applications in civil engineering
Proceedings of the IEEE, 1996This paper examines the issue of instrumentation for civil structures and in particular discusses the role of sensing systems in the evolution of the smart building concept. The sheer size of most structures of interest presents its own technological challenge in designing a suitable sensing architecture which will also conveniently address the area to

Techniques for the mechanical characterisation of civil structures
Materials and Structures, 1996Broadly speaking, structural defects include all those changes affecting a structure so that its behaviour is no longer in keeping with its intended use characteristics or differs from the behaviour it was originally designed for. In recent years, damage recognition and location methods, relying on the measurement of parameters that are indicative of a

Dynamic monitoring of civil engineering structures
2015 3rd Experiment International Conference (exp.at'15), 2015The paper describes two dynamic monitoring systems installed in civil engineering structures, a footbridge and a suspended stadium roof. These systems are used for characterization of environmental and operational effects and, in the limit, for the early detection of damage. Some examples of collected data and results are presented.

NGOs, Civil Society and Structural Changes
2021This book suggests that our notions of civil society have undergone radical changes-including structural changes in the nature of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Such massive structural changes greatly problematize the older liberal view of a simple split between state and civil society actors which ...

Aluminium Building and Civil Engineering Structures
1999The design of aluminium structures in building and civil engineering applications is different from designing in traditional materials. This difference is based on the physical and mechanical properties of the material and the freedom of cross-sectional shape provided by the extrusion manufacturing process.

Structural health monitoring of civil infrastructure
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2006Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a term increasingly used in the last decade to describe a range of systems implemented on full-scale civil infrastructures and whose purposes are to assist and inform operators about continued ‘fitness for purpose’ of structures under gradual or sudden changes to their state, to learn about either or both of the ...

An overview of wireless structural health monitoring for civil structures
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2006Wireless monitoring has emerged in recent years as a promising technology that could greatly impact the field of structural monitoring and infrastructure asset management. This paper is a summary of research efforts that have resulted in the design of numerous wireless sensing unit prototypes explicitly intended for implementation in civil structures ...
