Coupled Above‐ and Belowground Ecosystem Stability Worldwide

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Are the worlds above and below our feet in sync? This global exploration reveals an entangled fate between above‐ and belowground ecosystem stability. It identifies arid regions as hotspots for this coupling and highlights temperature stability as a vital safeguard for maintaining ecosystem balance across our warming planet.

Visualizing and Quantifying Impact with Mechanochromic Sensing Paints Based on Self‐Assembled Polydiacetylene‐Silk Core‐Shell Vesicles

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tracking physical impacts is important in many fields. Self‐assembled microparticles made from polydiacetylene and silk fibroin that change color from blue to red when hit can provide an alternative approach to traditional mechanical transducers, quantitatively visualizing impact with responses ranging from <100 to 770 N.

The Errors and Limitations of Our “Anger-Evaluating” Ways [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In this chapter I give an account of how our judgments of anger often play out in certain political instances. While contemporary philosophers of emotion have provided us with check box guides like “fittingness” and “size” for evaluating anger, I will ...

A Bottom‐Up Design Framework for Multifunctional Lattice Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study introduces a generative AI framework for designing multifunctional lattice metamaterials. The method combines 3D Gaussian voxel generation with deep learning, enabling greater design freedom and structural performance. The optimized lattice metamaterials achieve enhanced energy absorption by 40–200% compared to conventional structures and ...

Public Deliberation in Russia: Deliberative Quality, Rationality and Interactivity of the Online Media Discussions

open access: yesMedia and Communication, 2019
Deliberation research is now undergoing two emerging trends: deliberation is shifting from offline to online, as well as from an inherently democratic concept to the one applicable to less competitive regimes (He & Warren, 2011). The goal of this article

Bioenergy Cropping Reduces the Spatiotemporal Scaling of Soil Bacterial Biodiversity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Consistent with patterns observed in plant and animal communities, soil bacterial communities exhibit significant species–time–area and phylogenetic–time–area relationships independent of nested structure. Bioenergy cropping significantly reduces the spatiotemporal scaling rates, particularly in sandy loam soils.

Encoding Cumulation to Learn Perturbative Nonlinear Oscillatory Dynamics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Weak nonlinearities critically shape the long term behavior of oscillatory systems but are difficult to identify from data. A data‐driven framework is introduced to infer governing equations of weakly nonlinear oscillators from sparse and noisy observations.
