Abstract In this paper the effect of the zone shape in a class based storage on the optimal picking tour of the S/R machine is investigated. The expected value of S/R machine travel time for multi command order picking is derived as a function of number of addresses and area of the rack.

Order picking has been considered as the most critical operation in warehousing. Recent trends in logistics demand faster but more reliable order picking systems. The efficiency of an order picking process greatly depends on the storage policy used, i.e. where products are located within the warehouse.

Design of class-based storage racks for minimizing travel time in a three-dimensional storage system
International Journal of Production Research, 1989This paper deals with a new storage structure layout method called ‘cubic-in-time’, for minimizing the travel time of selected handling equipment in a three-dimensional palletized storage system. Storage-system design algorithms for minimizing travel times are described, the results are analysed, and some general conclusions are drawn.

Performance of Class-Based Storage in a Unit-Load Warehouse
2016Storage policy performance in a warehouse is usually evaluated through average one-way travel distance or time. By considering the realistic required storage space (RSS) measured in number of locations, this chapter examines the performance of random, full turnover-based, and class-based storage policies for a unit-load warehouse operated by a forklift
