Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Nonlinear Unsteady Motions and NOx Production in Gas Turbine Combustors [PDF]
Chiefly for improved efficiency, the trend to increasing use of gas turbine engines in stationary powerplants has been firmly established. The requirement for minimum NOx production has motivated operation as close as practically possible near the lean

The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.

What Makes Complex Systems Complex? [PDF]
This paper explores some of the factors that make complex systems complex. We first examine the history of complex systems. It was Aristotle’s insight that how elements are joined together helps determine the properties of the resulting whole. We find (a)

Abstract Phase-space Networks Describing Reactive Dynamics
An abstract network approach is proposed for the description of the dynamics in reactive processes. The phase space of the variables (concentrations in reactive systems) is partitioned into a finite number of segments, which constitute the nodes of the ...

Influence of Geometric Design on Mechanical Performance of Auxetic Metastructure
Strategic geometric reinforcement transforms auxetic performance. This study evaluates 3D‐printed arrowhead metastructures, revealing that a modified design with local ring reinforcement suppresses premature failure to achieve superior energy absorption and structural efficiency.
