Innovation of Embedding Eggshell to Enhance Physical-Mechanical-Thermal Properties in Fired Clay Bricks via Extrusion Process

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2016
Eggshell functioned as a bio-filler and sintering aid added into earthenware clay compounds to make fire clay bricks via extrusion process. The main composition of eggshell is calcium carbonate (CaCO3) while the main composition of earthenware is ...

Ancient Clay Bricks: Manufacture and Properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The physical, mechanical and chemical properties of ancient fired clay bricks are addressed. A literature survey is carried out and samples of old Portuguese bricks dated from the 12th to 18th centuries are considered. A high porosity (15-40 %) and water absorption (10-20 %) is found.

A Termite‐Inspired Alternative to Cement

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A termite‐inspired composite of clay, cellulose, and lignin forms a dense fibrous network with concrete‐like strength (32 MPa) and superior elasticity, processed at ambient temperature. Abstract Clay combined with organic materials is used by termites as a strong and durable construction material for their mounds with minimal environmental impact. Here,

Quality Control of Clay Bricks

open access: yes, 2008
The quality control test for the durability of clay bricks based on saturation coefficients can be shortened using a one-min or one-h cold water absorption. The accuracy of current quality control procedures can be improved if both absorption and saturation coefficients are used together.

A Geomorphometric Approach to Estimate the Deterioration of Earthen Archaeological Sites by Rainfall and Diffusion Processes: The Huaca Chornancap (Eighth–14th Century ad), Lambayeque, Peru

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Rain‐induced erosion processes can severely damage Earthen archaeological sites. Huaca Chornancap (HCH; eighth–14th century ad) is a platform located in the Lambayeque region (Peru) exposed to seasonal rain due to El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

Listening to young children with disabilities: Experiences of quality in mainstream primary education

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract All children should have access to quality education through a child‐centred pedagogy. An inclusive, child‐centred pedagogy uses a strength‐based view of children that recognises each child as unique and competent, providing children with multiple opportunities to explore and learn at their own pace.

Safety soft sensor development for pilot‐scale ilmenite electric arc furnace using long short‐term memory‐based architecture

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract Ilmenite electric arc furnaces (EAFs) are used for smelting titanium‐iron oxide ore at high temperatures generated by electrical arcs to produce titanium slag and pig iron. As these units are pushed to their limits, ensuring safe and reliable operation becomes challenging.
