Chemo-Mechanical Modeling of Anhydritic Claystones
ABSTRACT: This paper presents a model for the swelling of anhydritic claystones – a severe problem in tunnelling. The model incorporates the effect of the chemical process of anhydrite to gypsum transformation via a strain decomposition in a mechanical (e.g., elastoplastic) part and a reaction-induced part.

Constitutive Model for Thermal Compaction of Clayey Geomaterials and Application to COx Claystone
International audienceClay formations present very favourable conditions for the long-term containment of radioactive waste due to their low hydraulic conductivity, high radionuclide retention capacity and limited fracturing in their natural state.

On the determination of pore size distribution by nitrogen Adsorption and Mercury intrusion Porosimetry for claystone [PDF]
Understanding the evolution of Callovo-Oxfordian (COx) claystone porosity under alkaline conditions is crucial for assessing its role as a geological barrier for nuclear waste deep geological disposal facility.

Palynology and stratigraphy of the Upper Miocene Chad Formation, Bornu Basin, northeastern Nigeria
Both lithological and palynological analyses were employed to decipher sedimentary stacking patterns and to date the sediments within the interval 50–325 m in Kemar-1 well, Bornu Basin, northeastern Nigeria. Eight different lithofacies units deposited in

Tunnelling in sulphate claystones
The paper reviews first the performance of some tunnels built in gypsiferous-anhydritic rocks, especially in Central Europe. Then, a description of the main gypsum-laden lithological rock units in Spain is made as an introduction for a description of the conditions found in a number of recently built tunnels in Spain, most of them associated with the ...

Active porosity in swelling claystone and shales: insight from the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone
In swelling claystones, significant clay-water interactions take place along the faces of the smectites minerals contained in the clay fraction, giving rise to the distinction between free water and adsorbed water. Further insight was recently gained by means of microstructure investigations, showing that the hydration mechanisms of pure or compacted ...
