Clear Water Scour at Circular Piers: a Model
Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1995The three-dimensional quasi-steady vortex flow field around circular piers in a quasi-equilibrium scour hole under a clear water regime has been investigated experimentally. The main characteristic features of the flow, to be modeled, are a relatively large secondary vortex flow within the scour hole and skewed velocity distributions along the ...

Pier scour in clear water for sediment mixtures
Journal of Hydraulic Research, 2012The current pier scour design in the USA is mainly based on the CSU equation, yet a recent incisive evaluation indicates a need to change it because substantial advances were made in the last two decades for understanding the pier scour processes. The objective of this research is then to propose a simplified scour mechanism and a physically-based ...

Experimental Investigation of Clear-Water Local Scour of Compound Piers
Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2009Local scour around complex piers under steady clear-water condition was studied experimentally for a variety of configuration, including different sizes and shapes of complex piers. A total of 70 experiments were carried out. Three sets of experiments were performed over the entire range of possible pile cap elevations for complex piers with different ...

Clear-Water Scour at Abutments in Thinly Armored Beds
Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2004Experiments on local scour at short abutments (ratio of abutment length to approaching flow depth less than unity), namely vertical-wall, 45° wing-wall, and semicircular, embedded in a bed of relatively fine noncohesive sediment overlain by a thin armor-layer of coarser sediment, were conducted for different flow conditions, thickness of armor-layers ...

Effect of abutment aspect ratio on clear‐water scour in floodplains
Rivers Research and Applications: an international journal devoted to river research and management, 2019Scour around abutments is recognized as one of the main reasons of bridge foundations failure. This paper presents the experimental results of the effects of abutment width and length on the scour development up to its equilibrium condition around 45 ...

Equilibrium Clear-Water Scour around an Abutment
Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1997The author presents a semiempirical analysis of equilibrium local clear-water scour at a bridge abutment that is based on the flow-continuity equation, scour geometry, and a generalized form of the power-law formula for flow resistance in an alluvial channel.

Clear‐Water Scour around Bridge Pier Group
Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1994Recent attempts have been made to reduce scour around solid circular piers. Such attempts use riprap, a circular collar around, a rectangular slot through, and a delta wing‐like fin ahead of piers. Providing another scour reduction device, the present paper replaces the solid pier by a group of three smaller piers.

Temporal Evolution of Clear-Water Pier and Abutment Scour
Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2002Scour related to bridge hydraulics received much attention in the past decade, including its relation to flood hydrology and hydraulic processes in addition to steady flow. This paper presents new research on bridge pier and abutment scour based on a large data set collected at ETH Zurich, Switzerland.

Clear-water scour at submerged pile groups
2013Groups of piles are frequently used as bridge foundations. Different group configurations, characterized by different pile spacing, skew-angle, number, and arrangement of pile group columns interact differently with the flow field and lead to different scour patterns and equilibrium scour depth.
