Congenital cleft foot deformity (split foot or lobster claw)

A case of congenital cleft foot deformity, also known as lobster claw or split foot, is presented. The condition is rare. A review of the literature reveals that this deformity will often coexist as part of a constellation of congenital and familial abnormalities. Surgical correction of the cleft foot is difficult and often deferred.

The reconstruction of lobster-cleft foot is no longer considered from a functional point of view only. The aesthetic appearance of the repaired foot is now considered to be equally important. [Surgical treatment for cleft foot].

The methods and results of treatment of 13 cleft foot in 8 patients are presented. An approximating dexon-polyester suture has been used in Blauth I deformity. Joplin procedure (resection of the intermediate cuneiform) has been done in grade III deformities. If hallux valgus coexisted an arthrodesis of interphalangeal joint has been performed.

The split-hand/split-foot anomaly is a component of several disorders which may occur sporadically or be transmitted as autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive traits. We describe a severely mentally handicapped patient with ectrodactyly of both feet in association with extreme microphthalmia, central cleft-lip and palate and mental retardation.

[Surgical treatment of congenital cleft foot].

Results of surgical treatment for congenital cleft foot in 3 patients (5 foot) are reported. Two foot were classified type IIIA, 1--IIIB and 2--IVB according to Blauth and Borisch. Mean age of the patients at the surgery was 97 months, mean follow-up was 39 months.
