Modeling the Paths from L2 Use and Socio‐Affective Variables to Communication Skills: A Mixed‐Methods Approach

open access: yesTESOL Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract Previous research demonstrated that communication anxiety reduces L2 learners' willingness to communicate and communication frequency, but left unexplored its impact on performance. The current mixed‐methods study investigated factors impacting L2 communication skills.

Prospective comparison of chronic pain and quality of life in dogs presenting with five common orthopaedic conditions

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Chronic pain, which affects multiple aspects of dogs' wellbeing, including quality of life (QoL), was assessed in dogs with elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, medial patella luxation, cranial cruciate ligament rupture or osteoarthritis.

A high‐altitude thermal infrared method for estimating moose abundance and demography in Rocky Mountain National Park, USA

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Resource managers require accurate estimates of large herbivore abundance and demography to maintain ecological integrity. Common methods to count these species, including observations from low altitude helicopter flights, may conflict with other protected area management objectives and struggle to produce precise estimates for more cryptic species. Experimental assessment of large mammal population estimates from airborne thermal videography

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Wildlife resource management requires reliable, fast, and affordable methods of surveying wildlife populations to develop and adaptively adjust policies. Thermal video from drones can yield high rates of detection over large areas with relative speed and safety.

Comparison of data handling techniques for modeling bat acoustic activity

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
We deployed 169 acoustic recording units (A) across the Raystown Lake Project, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, USA (B). Echolocation recordings were used to evaluate alternative acoustic data handling methods and their effects on bat acoustic activity model predictions.
