Adapting the community sector for climate extremes [PDF]

open access: yes
People experiencing poverty and inequality will be affected first and worst by the impacts of climate change to infrastructure and human settlements, including those caused by increasingly frequent and intense extreme weather events and natural ...

Persistently Increased Expression of PKMzeta and Unbiased Gene Expression Profiles Identify Hippocampal Molecular Traces of a Long‐Term Active Place Avoidance Memory and “Shadow” Proteins

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Protein complexes like KIBRA‐PKMζ are crucial for maintaining memories, forming month‐long protein traces in memory‐tagged neurons, but conventional RNA‐seq analysis fails to detect their transcript changes, leaving memory molecules undetected in the shadows of abundantly‐expressed genes.

Spurious Trends in High Latitude Southern Hemisphere Precipitation Observations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The high latitude Southern Hemisphere (SH) is an important region for Earth's climate. Ocean heat content, cryosphere interactions, Antarctic bottom water development and the cloud‐albedo feedbacks need to be understood to form a complete picture of the ...

Blowin\u27 in the wind: Short-term weather and belief in anthropogenic climate change. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A series of polls provides new tests for how weather influences public beliefs about climate change. Statewide data from 5000 random-sample telephone interviews conducted on 99 days over 2.5 yr (2010-12) are merged with temperature and precipitation ...

Optimal Grazing Exclusion Duration to Enhance Soil Carbon Sequestration in Degraded Grasslands

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Across China, grazing exclusion reaches the national mean soil organic carbon recovery benchmark sooner in high‐MAP regions (> 500 mm), but recovery is much slower where MAP < 300 mm. Scaling this strategy to 70% of China's degraded grasslands would sequester about 1.52 Pg of soil carbon over 10 years—roughly 17% of annual global fossil‐fuel emissions.

Extreme Associated Functions: Optimally Linking Local Extremes to Large-scale Atmospheric Circulation Structures

open access: yes, 2007
We present a new statistical method to optimally link local weather extremes to large-scale atmospheric circulation structures. The method is illustrated using July-August daily mean temperature at 2m height (T2m) time-series over the Netherlands and 500

Deciphering the Evolution Pattern of Structural Variations Overlapped With Repetitive Sequence During Cattle Evolution

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The authors complement bovine pan‐SV with massive novel structural variations (SVs) identified through long‐read sequencing of 83 globally distributed cattle breeds. Repetitive sequence‐mediated SVs (rep‐SV) exhibit distinct dynamic patterns throughout cattle sub‐speciation and/or domestication processes, including uneven distribution between chr‐X and

Programmable Semi‐Interpenetrating Living Materials With Robust Stability for Versatile Bioremediation and Biotherapeutics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A semi‐interpenetrating engineered living material (sIHSELM), fabricated via thermosensitive hydroxybutyl chitosan and covalent protein self‐assembly, demonstrates exceptional mechanical properties and environmental stability. Shielding bacteria from harsh conditions, sIHSELM exhibits remarkable efficacy in ulcerative colitis treatment and pollutants ...

High‐Throughput Screening and Interpretable Machine Learning for Rational Design of Bimetallic Catalysts for Methane Activation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Methane's efficient catalytic removal is vital for sustainable development. Bimetallic catalysts, though promising for methane activation, pose a design challenge due to their complex compositional space. This work introduces an integrated framework that combines high‐throughput density functional theory (DFT) and interpretable machine ...

Australian Rainfall Increases During Multi‐Year La Niña

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Australia is one of the regions strongly affected by the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The recent 2020–2023 La Niña event was marked by record‐breaking rainfall and flooding across eastern Australia. The continuous wet conditions during the triple
