Climate Variability and Global Warming
Science, 2001Although uncertainties in global warming are many and varied, they are not as great as stated in the recent U.S. National Research Council (NRC) report ([1][1]). As Richard A. Kerr notes in his News of the Week article, President George W. Bush seized upon these uncertainties to justify the administration's limited response (“Bush backs spending for a ‘

Climatic warming and the degradation of warm permafrost
Permafrost and Periglacial Processes, 1996Permafrost—a widespread constituent of the terrestrial environment—by definition is dependent upon the ambient temperature for its existence and properties. Thus, it is very sensitive to climatic changes. Simple relations based upon conductive heat transfer, with thawing and geothermal heat flow, are presented to predict the transient effects of ...

Most of the warm areas in the world lie between 0 to 34°N and S. Major potato production occurs between 23°N and 34°N and represents the subtropical lowlands, where potato is a winter crop (Hijmans, 2001). During the last three decades, potato areas increased in the developing world and North America while it decreased in Europe (FAO 2000, 2001).

Global warming and climatic changes

The present climate, which falls between the last ice age and the next, is relatively stable. New data on past climate change, however, indicates that the climate is capable of undergoing abrupt changes from one mode to another. In his Perspective, Overpeck describes the current research into the history of climate change and how it might influence our
