Plant Responses to Anomalous Heat and Drought Events in the Sonoran Desert. [PDF]

open access: yesGlob Chang Biol
What are the impacts of region‐wide heat and drought events on desert vegetation? This multi‐scale assessment shows that columnar cacti and succulent trees show acute plant stress across the Sonoran Desert. The expected increased frequency of heat and drought events will likely have landscape‐wide impacts that could fundamentally reshape populations of

Global maps of soil temperature. [PDF]

open access: yesGlob Chang Biol, 2022
We provide global maps of soil temperature at a 1 km2 resolution, based on a global database of more than 8500 in situ soil temperature time series. We show that over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are on average 3.6°C warmer, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are 0.7°C cooler than gridded air temperature.

Variability of maximum and minimum monthly mean air temperatures over mainland Spain and their relationship with low‐variability atmospheric patterns for period 1916–2015

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 42, Issue 3, Page 1723-1741, 15 March 2022., 2022
Monthly temperature trends over mainland Spain during 1916–2015 shows that warming has not been constant over time nor generalized among different months; it has not been synchronous for maximum and minimum temperatures; and it has been heterogeneous in space.

Palynological evidence of Middle Pleistocene palaeoenvironmental changes from the ‘Buca dell’Onice’ flowstone (Alpi Apuane, Central Italy)

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, Volume 8, Issue 1, Page 340-354, February 2022., 2022
An exceptionally thick Middle Pleistocene flowstone is preserved in the Alpi Apuane (central Italy). Two main depositional cycles, separated by a physical discontinuity, have been characterised by sedimentological and pilot palynological studies which suggest that deposition occured during humid phases under both warm and cool climate conditions ...

Seasonal temperature trends on the Spanish mainland: A secular study (1916–2015)

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 41, Issue 5, Page 3071-3084, April 2021., 2021
Spatial evolution of land affected by significant trend under increasing temporal windows shows that mean seasonal temperature rose in a not regular fashion. Seasonal Tmax in spring and summer show two main positive period, while only one in winter; autumn show an intermediate behaviour accordingly area affected.

Geospatial Analysis of Soil Erosion including Precipitation Scenarios in a Conservation Area of the Amazon Region in Peru

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Soil Science, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
The Tilacancha Private Conservation Area provides fresh water to the city of Chachapoyas. Therefore, the amount of soil lost in the year and under precipitation scenarios was determined. Individually, the values of the factors were obtained: rain erosivity (R) in 2019 and simulating increase and decrease of 15% of rainfall, soil erodibility (K), length

Droughts in central Chile using different indices during the 1981-2010 period

open access: yesInvestigaciones Geográficas, 2015
The different dimensions of meteorological drought in central Chile in order to characterize their occurrence at multiple time scales and find evidence of variability and change in frequency are analyzed. For that, there are 27 meteorological stations at

Flood related mortality in a touristic island: Mallorca (Balearic Islands) 1960–2018

open access: yesJournal of Flood Risk Management, Volume 13, Issue 4, December 2020., 2020
Abstract Although they exist, fatalities related to floods are a rare occurrence in the island of Mallorca. In the aftermath of the Sant Llorenç flash‐flood of October 2018, which killed 13 people, a research was undertaken to develop database gathering information about the flood related victims on the island.

Precipitation regionalization, anomalies and drought occurrence in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 40, Issue 10, Page 4541-4555, August 2020., 2020
It is important to better understand spatial and temporal precipitation variability and drought occurrence. This research explores spatio‐temporal variability of precipitation and drought occurrence using statistical and geostatistical techniques to generate precipitation and droughts maps.
