A study of the 23 October 2022 southern England damaging MCS

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
During the afternoon of 23 October 2022, a mesoscale convective system (MCS) developed and intensified over the English Channel and tracked north‐northeastward into southern England, producing widespread damaging winds and at least three moderate to strong tornadoes in Hampshire.

An observational study of a circular gust front over the Yangtze Delta, China

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
Concentric gust fronts are formed when a thunderstorm's downdraft reaches the ground and the outflow from the cold pool spreads uniformly outwards into the surrounding warm and humid air mass. Observational evidence presented here show the case of narrow‐band echoes forming a ring around a thunderstorm.

Moisture transport by convective overshoots in the tropical tropopause layer

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
Deep convection overshooting the tropical tropopause offers the potential for significant transport of moisture into the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) by avoiding the cold‐point temperature constraint on water vapour concentration. As vertical transport through the TTL largely sets global stratospheric composition, convective hydration is an ...

2024: The year with too much summer in the eastern part of Europe

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
The summer of 2024 brought record‐breaking heatwaves to Eastern Europe, with Romania experiencing the brunt. Analysis of 140 years of data from Bucharest shows a significant increase in heatwave frequency and intensity, with 2024 setting new records. The third heatwave in 2024 was the most intense ever recorded.
