Residual Stress Distributions around Clinched Joints
Materials Science Forum, 2002Clinching is a mechanical press joining method, which has become of growing interest in recent time since it has the potential to replace other conventional joining methods like e.g. spot welding. However, there still exists a lack of knowledge in terms of the mechanical behavior of clinched joints under quasistatic or cyclic loading.

Feasibility of Forming Aluminium-Polymer Clinched Joint with Round Grooved Clinch Set
2021Application of lightweight materials such as metals and polymers has become more important in aerospace and automotive industries. Joining of dissimilar materials is relatively challenging as compared to conventional joining of similar materials due to the differences of mechanical properties. Thus, the present research is carried out experimentally to

Forced Vibration Measurements of Clinched Joints
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014As a result of the trend towards lightweight construction in manufacturing, there has been a significant increase in the use of clinched joints in engineering structures and components. Mechanical structures assembled by clinching are expected to possess a high damping capacity.

Failure behavior in electrically-assisted mechanical clinching joints
Journal of Manufacturing Processes, 2021Abstract The failure behavior of AA6061-T6/DP590 clinched joints was investigated using an integrated 2-step FE model. The effectiveness of the electro-plastic effect on the formability and the material flow was studied on aluminum to high-strength steel hybrid clinched joints.

Technology of Clinch–Adhesive Joints
2010The technology of clinching is rather old. The first patent for clinching was granted in Germany in 1897. However, pure clinching was not used on an industrial scale until the 80s of the twentieth century. Shortage of this cold-formed mechanical fastening can be removed by hybrid joining involving clinching and adhesion techniques.

Mechanical properties of the two-steps clinched joint with a clinch-rivet
Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2016Abstract In the present study, mechanical properties of the two-steps clinched joint with a clinch-rivet were investigated. The two-steps clinching method includes two steps, mechanical clinching and upsetting with a clinch-rivet. The protrusion of the joint was upset to reduce the protrusion height with different upsetting forces.

Influence of clinching steps and sheet thickness on the mechanical properties of the clinching joint
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2021In order to reduce the protrusion height and increase the strength of the clinched joint, a two-step clinching method was investigated in the present study. The whole process contains two steps. The first step is used to produce one-step clinched joints, and the second step is used to press the one-step clinched joints to reduce the protrusion height ...

Residual stress in clinched joints of metals
Applied Physics A: Materials Science & Processing, 2002Diffraction methods are used for the determination of characteristic residual stress (RS) distributions in undismantled clinched samples for the assessment of the influence of RS on the mechanical behaviour of clinched joints. While X-ray diffraction enables merely the determination of near-surface RS distributions, the higher penetration depth of ...

The clinching process is more and more used in automotive design and manufacturing. Traditional quality inspection of joints needs a lot of destructive tests, which is time-consuming and material-consuming. In this paper, the clinching process and joints failure of dissimilar materials, 6061 aluminium alloy and HC340/590DP dual-phase steel, are ...
