The accuracy of death dates recorded in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD)

open access: yesPharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety, 2017
CPRD provides general practice (GOLD) data linked to several other datasets. This can reveal discrepancies in key outcomes where similar data is available in two linked data sources. We explored discrepancies between death date recorded in the GOLD dataset and linked ONS national mortality data.

An algorithm to improve diagnostic accuracy in diabetes in computerised problem orientated medical records (POMR) compared with an established algorithm developed in episode orientated records (EOMR)

open access: yesJournal of Innovation in Health Informatics, 2015
An algorithm that detects errors in diagnosis, classification or coding of diabetes in primary care computerised medial record (CMR) systems is currently available.  However, this was developed on CMR systems that are “Episode orientated” medical records

Associations of Sleep and Shift Work with Osteoarthritis Risk

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objective Daily rhythms may be critical for maintaining homeostasis of joint tissues. We aimed to investigate the relationships between circadian clock disruption, sleep, and osteoarthritis (OA) risk in humans. Methods In the UK Biobank, a prospective 500,000‐person cohort, we evaluated associations between sleep duration, sleeplessness/insomnia, and ...

Costs of Gastrointestinal Bleeding Events in Atrial Fibrillation: A Uk Clinical Practice Research Datalink Study [PDF]

open access: yesFuture Cardiology, 2019
Aim: To estimate the healthcare costs attributable to gastrointestinal (GI) bleeds in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients. Material & methods: A difference-in-differences approach was used in which NVAF patients suffering a (GI) bleed were propensity score matched to those not suffering a GI bleed, and the difference in healthcare costs in ...

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Frontotemporal Dementia Have Distinct Prediagnostic Blood Biochemical Profiles

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective Identifying modifiable factors influencing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) risk is important for prevention. Blood biomarkers, particularly cholesterol, have been associated with neurodegenerative risk, but findings in ALS are inconsistent, and data on FTD are limited.

An algorithm to identify rheumatoid arthritis in primary care: a Clinical Practice Research Datalink study [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ Open, 2015
Objective Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a multisystem, inflammatory disorder associated with increased levels of morbidity and mortality. While much research into the condition is conducted in the secondary care setting, routinely collected primary care databases provide an important source of research data.

Drug‐Induced Raynaud's Phenomenon and Underlying Mechanism: A Disproportionality Analysis From the World Health Organization Pharmacovigilance Database

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, EarlyView.
Objectives The aim of this study is to generate hypotheses about unknown drugs associated with the onset or worsening of Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) and to explore their potential pathophysiologic mechanisms through a mixed disproportionality/clustering analysis from the World Health Organization (WHO) pharmacovigilance database.

Prescribing of medication to prevent glucocorticoid harms in patients with Polymyalgia Rheumatica: a cross‐sectional study and two emulated target trials in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink Aurum

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, Accepted Article.
Objectives Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a common indication for long‐term glucocorticoid (GC) treatment. Bone‐ and gastro‐protective medications are recommended for those at high‐risk of adverse events from GCs but no trials have evaluated their effectiveness in PMR.

Psoriasis and the Risk of Major Cardiovascular Events: Cohort Study Using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Investigative Dermatology, 2015
The association between psoriasis and risk of major cardiovascular (CV) events (myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome, unstable angina, and stroke) is unclear. A cohort study with 48,523 patients with psoriasis and 208,187 controls was conducted. During a median follow-up of 5.2 years, 1,257 patients with psoriasis (2.59%) had a major CV event,

Adverse events profile of oral corticosteroids among asthma patients in the UK: cohort study with a nested case-control analysis

open access: yesRespiratory Research, 2018
Background To evaluate the adverse events profile of oral prednisolone among adult asthma patients in the UK. Methods Using data from the UK-based Clinical Practice Research Datalink, we conducted a series of cohort studies to quantify incidence rates ...
