Renal perfusion pressure: role and implications in critical illness

open access: yesAnnals of Intensive Care
The pressure-flow relationship is fundamental to circulatory hemodynamics of any organ. In the kidney, renal perfusion pressure (RPP), defined as the gradient between mean arterial pressure and renal venous pressure or mean systemic filling pressure ...

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Significance of positive semi-quantitative PCR tests on bronchoalveolar lavage for Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in HIV-negative immunocompromised ICU patients with acute respiratory failure

open access: yesAnnals of Intensive Care
Context: Real-time PCR (rt-PCR) using cycle threshold (Ct) is a semi-quantitative way to assess DNA amounts, which has become broadly used to diagnose Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) in non-HIV immunocompromised patients.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Incidence and outcomes of extubation failure in mechanically ventilated patients with cirrhosis: a post-hoc analysis of a prospective multicenter study

open access: yesAnnals of Intensive Care
Background: Patients with comorbidities who are liberated from invasive mechanical ventilation could be at risk of extubation failure in the intensive care unit (ICU). Incidence and associated outcomes of reintubation in patients with cirrhosis have been

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.
