Comments on the classification of the Clitellata
Hydrobiologia, 1989Sawyer’s (1986) assignment of the Branchiobdellida to the Hirudinea is reviewed and rejected. The Clitellata is considered a subphylum of the phylum Annelida and contains the classes Oligochaeta, Hirudinea and Branchiobdellida.

146 Euura clitellata group sp. 1 Fig. 374 A single male (ZMUO.035580) from Utsjoki (Finland) is clearly a different species from the others in the group, based on nuclear DNA. The penis valve is not clearly distinguishable from E. clitellata, but externally (colouration and the projection of tergite 8) it is most similar to E. fallax.

Evolutionary relationships within the clitellata
Soil Biology and Biochemistry, 1992Abstract The results from published cladistic analyses of various oligochaete taxa suggest that the Haplotaxidase is a paraphyletic taxon once Metataxis is transfered to the Lumbricina and Tiguassu to the Tiguassidae. The Branchiobdellida and Lumbriculidae appear to have shared a common ancestor in which two male ducts enter each strium.
